“The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.”
Proverbs 22:7
This verse shows that borrowing puts you in a position of poverty. Borrowing often leads to debt, planting seeds of laziness and a diminished sense of self-worth. It can devalue your potential, making you believe you’re incapable of building something for yourself.
The saying, “Teach a man to fish rather than give him a fish,” is wise. It keeps both poverty and debt away. Poverty and debt corrupt the body and the mind. They convince you that you can’t stand on your own, keeping you dependent like a slave who waits on his master for his next meal. Like a baby suckling its mother’s milk, debt keeps you clinging to your lender for dear life. This strips you of independence and traps you in mental bondage.
Debt is not from God. God desires for His children to flourish and prosper, as Scripture promises. Debt often drives people into places they were never meant to be.
A desperate person may resort to shameful acts just to free themselves from financial oppression. Debt is the enemy’s tool for ensnaring people in captivity. But God has planted talents in everyone to help them succeed.
Just as He gave birds beaks, wild animals claws, sharks teeth, and trees sap and deep roots to survive even in harsh conditions He has placed something within you to help you live in freedom. You only need to uncover it.
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”
Matthew 6:24
Being in debt can force you to serve two masters. The Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil. It’s not always greed that leads people into debt, but misplaced trust, trusting money over God’s grace and gifts.
Relying on money to solve your problems is what often lands people in debt. While money may seem to answer many of life’s challenges, it can never bring true fulfilment.
We’ve all heard of people who’ve gained wealth yet remain unhappy. That’s because, although money offers luxury and comfort, it can never replace genuine contentment.
Holding money in one hand and God in the other is a mistake many Christians make. Instead of holding firmly to God with both hands, some chase wealth at the cost of their faith. But for the Christian, God should be enough. He created you in His image, which means He understands you better than you understand yourself. He knows your deepest needs, even before you do.
As Scripture says, He knew you even in your mother’s womb. Therefore, your thoughts and prayers must go through God and once they do, you must wait on His response and live in alignment with His will.
Prayer for the Overwhelmed in Debt
Dear Lord,
I am in a bad place, and I don’t know where to begin. This debt has consumed my peace, clouded my thoughts, and left me anxious and exhausted. I can’t even put two thoughts together anymore. I feel desperate, like I’m sinking into something deeper each day. Sometimes, the weight is so heavy I think of doing things I know I shouldn’t—just to escape.
Lord, I long for freedom from this burden. I don’t want to feel like a failure anymore. I don’t want to keep running from my problems. Please reach into this dark place and pull me out. Free my mind from the enemy's grip. Cast out the negative, destructive thoughts that whisper defeat. Give me your strength, the strength to hold on, to keep believing, even when I can’t see a way.
Help me to remember that this season will pass, that this pain is not the end of my story. Turn this trial into a testimony. Let my future be brighter than this moment, and let me look back someday and say, “God delivered me.”
Amen.
Prayer for the Hopeless and Defeated
Dear Lord,
Right now, I feel like there’s no hope left in me. I look around and see nothing but chaos and loss. My world feels like it’s crumbling, and I can’t hold it together anymore. I’m plagued by defeatist thoughts, and I confess I’ve started believing them. It feels like I’m at the very bottom, with no ladder to climb.
But even in this pit, I turn to you. I don’t want to believe the lies of the enemy. I want to believe in your promises again. Lord, please help me find your grace. Help me remember who I am in you, not who my circumstances say I am.
You are the God who sees me, even in the valley. So see me now, Lord. Reach down and lift me out of this state. Let your light pierce this darkness. Remind me that no situation is beyond your redemption. You are still my hope, my help, my salvation.
Amen.
Prayer for Restored Hope in Financial Struggle
Dear Lord
Though I feel like I’m sitting in a dungeon, cut off from joy and peace, I still whisper your name. Though I’m surrounded by walls with no windows or doors, I know you can make a way. Every path feels like a dead end, and yet, I believe you hold the map I cannot see.
Give me hope, Lord. Not just a fleeting emotion, but a deep, lasting hope in you. Give me a reason to believe again. I don’t need all the answers, I just need to know you’re with me. Give me a sign, a small glimmer, a still voice to remind me I’m not forgotten.
Touch my heart. Silence the noise in my mind that tells me I’m finished. Be the loudest voice, the voice of truth and direction. Show me that this mess can still be a miracle in the making. Let your presence be the hope I hold on to.
Amen.
Prayer for Victory Over Debt
Father Lord,
I come to you weary and heavy-laden. This debt is not just numbers on paper, it’s a storm in my soul. It has stolen my sleep and made me question my worth. But today, I ask for your power to overcome. Help me, Lord, to see this debt as something I can rise above with your help.
You’ve blessed me before, and I know you haven’t stopped watching over me. Let this nightmare become a testimony of your grace. Remind me that you are still Jehovah Jireh, my provider. Though I may not see how, I believe you can bring me out of this situation.
Lead me with your hand. Deliver me from financial bondage and plant my feet on a better path. Show me your faithfulness once again, and let this suffering come to an end, not just for relief, but for your glory.
Amen.
Prayer for Divine Direction Through Debt
Father Lord,
I’m lost. My thoughts are foggy, my heart is heavy, and I can’t see the next step. I feel overwhelmed by shame and confusion. People think I’m careless, but they don’t see how hard I’ve tried. I’m watching everything I worked for slip away, and I’m terrified.
Please, Lord, light up the way. Shine your truth into my confusion. Show me which door to knock on, which path to walk, and which choice to make. If I’ve gone wrong, guide me gently back. If I’ve been blind, open my eyes.
I need your wisdom now more than ever. I need your clarity, your confidence, your peace. Deliver me from this mental prison and show me that my story isn’t over. Let your name be glorified even in this.
Amen.

Prayer for Peace in the Midst of Financial Turmoil
Dear Lord,
Right now, I’m praying for one thing: peace. I long for peace in my heart, in my home, in my finances, in my relationships, and in every part of my life. This debt has stirred up anxiety and tension in every corner of my world. But I know your peace is stronger than any storm.
Let your peace settle like a gentle rain over my soul. Let it wash away the chaos and remind me that you are still in control. Do not let this financial stress ruin what matters most - my family, my relationships, my purpose.
Guard my mind from fear. Hold me when I feel like breaking. Be the calm in this storm, the stillness in this noise. You are my peace, and I choose to rest in you.
Amen.
Prayer for Financial Blessing and Provision
Dear Lord,
Thank you for the gift of life, for breath in my lungs, and for another chance to come before you. Today, I approach your throne with a humble heart. I admit that I’ve strayed, that I’ve often gone my own way instead of listening to your still, small voice. I’ve made decisions without seeking your guidance, and I now find myself in a place of lack and struggle.
But you are a merciful God. You are the Father who welcomes home the prodigal, the Shepherd who seeks out the lost sheep. Please, Lord, help me out of this situation. I lay down my pride and surrender my plans. I ask that you reign over my finances, my thoughts, my efforts, and my future.
Pour your blessings upon me, not just so that I may prosper, but so that I may be a blessing to others. I am a partaker in your kingdom, and I know that poverty is not my portion. Your Word says you own the cattle on a thousand hills, and I believe that your provision has no limit. Let me walk in that truth.
Give me the strength to rise each day with purpose. Guide the work of my hands and let all I touch flourish. Revive every dead field in my life. Let dry places become fruitful. Let my harvest be plentiful, not just financially, but in joy, peace, and wisdom. And as you bless me, let your Spirit transform how I see money, how I use it, and how I honour you with it.
I trust in you completely. Let your name be glorified in my testimony.
Amen.
Debt is an unpleasant and painful experience. It brings a storm of thoughts that can make you feel trapped, as though nothing will ever go your way. But remember, this is exactly how the devil wants you to feel. He thrives on your hopelessness, trying to push you into despair so you turn away from God. But when you reach this point, think back on all the times God has delivered you before. Don’t doubt Him now. Believe in your heart that, with God, you can and will make it through anything.
