“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland Isaiah 43:18-19
What do you consider to be a breakthrough? What do you consider a miracle? People often seek miracles or breakthroughs when a situation is on a downward spiral or a nosedive into destruction and every single hope is lost.
Imagine being part of the Israelites who were fleeing from Pharoah and his army. You are already panicking because you know that you are being pursued by enemies who are going to slay you when they catch up with you. You then come face to face with the Red Sea and there is no dry land for you to go through. Behind you are enemies who are going to slay you and in front of you is a large ocean. This is an example of a hopeless situation.
God hardens Pharoah’s heart all along to get the Israelites into this situation. They were definitely thinking to themselves ‘How have we gotten ourselves into this situation?’ They were slaves in Egypt and were subjected to a lot of harsh situations but this was on another level. They were free from their oppressors but they were facing certain death as a result at this point in time.
Of course, God knew the plans He had for them all along. He knew He was going to deliver them from Pharoah and his army but He needed the Israelites to understand that He would deliver them even in the worst of situations. When there seemed no way back or forward, He would always deliver them and free them from their enemies. Anything that looked impossible for them as mere mortals would not be impossible for the Lord God Almighty.
Let us analyze the common themes that were associated with divine breakthroughs in the Bible. What was the situation leading up to it and what were the signs that preceded that breakthrough? What we as humans see as breakthroughs are just God’s way of telling us He was in control all along and never left those whom He calls His own.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight’’ Proverbs 3:5-6.
It is very easy to interpret the things you see in your own way. It is also very easy to take what people tell you as truth because it seems to make sense. People normally look at the situation you are in and try to find stories that make sense so that they can try to interpret your situation to you in a way that makes sense.
These theories and explanations look very plausible because there are times you may have thought the same things were responsible for the situation that you find yourself in. It is important to know that only God knows the truth. He is the truth.
The truth is absolute and no one can add or remove anything from it. There are people who are convicted and in prison serving time for crimes they did not commit. This is possible because, at the time of their trials, the evidence that came to light were only ones that spoke to their convictions. For this reason the jury was convinced that they committed those crimes. It made perfect sense at the time to convict them because all witnesses and evidence proved that they committed the crime.
That however is not the truth. The truth is that they did not commit the crime however in the eyes of men they committed those crimes. It may be years until the actual truth comes out before people realize that they did not actually commit those crimes and were wrongly accused and convicted. God however knows the truth. This demonstrates that you must not lean on the things you hear or see to make decisions in your life but rather seek God’s truth first.
If you do not wait on God’s truth and seek His direction you will try to find your own breakthroughs as a result of deceitful words and directions you get from people. These only lead to pain and time wasted as in the case of the wrongfully convicted.
God’s breakthroughs are controlled by Him and he gives them to you when the time is exactly right. He leads you naturally to His breakthroughs and only requires you to do as He tells you. You must not try to create your own by listening to the words of mortals or your own understanding but rather follow His directions and do as He tells you. This is how you will receive His truth and find His divine breakthrough.
6 Signs of a major breakthrough
God leads you naturally
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps Proverbs 16:9
If you have been following God’s natural directions despite any difficulty you are facing then the chances are that you are about to reach your breakthrough. Do not forget that only Him knows the best and expected end for you. That means that if you follow His lead carefully and do not listen to outside voices that seek to show you their own interpretations and directions, you will find that perfect end.
You may have your own plans in your head about what you think will benefit you. But as we have seen before, it doesn’t matter whether it makes all the sense in the world to you it may not be the truth. Only God knows the truth about what is best for your future and the closer you are to Him, the clearer His directions will be
All hope seems lost
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me 2 Corinthians 12:9
Another possible sign of a divine breakthrough is when all hope is lost. As we saw before God showed His power to the Israelites when they didn’t have any human power to proceed. God wanted to show them that it was through His strength that they made it through that predicament.
When we know that our strengths have completely failed, God shows His power to let us know that He is with us. You have to trust in God even in the most difficult of moments. When there seems no way in front of you or behind you, He shows Himself strong and bigger than all your problems.
The devil will always attack you at your weakest. When things look like they are not going your way, it may come into your mind that God has forsaken you. Do not fall for these thoughts because the devil will capitalize on them and take your mind off God. It is very important to expect God’s divine breakthrough when every human strength fails you and there is no hope for your future.
You rely on God’s truth
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.” 1 Kings 17:24
As we’ve seen before the truth is absolute. God is truth and only Him knows what men hide. The woman saw that Elijah was from God because he knew the truth. What he said came to pass. You will only get your breakthrough if you listen to the truth and not what people insinuate or speculate to you.
It does not matter whether what you hear confirms your suspicions or not, it does not make it true. God reveals his truth to His children and those who listen attentively to him. You will have your breakthrough if you do this and are not swayed by the winds of life or the doubters around you. Look ahead to God’s work and plans for your life.
It’s beyond human understanding
I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. Psalm 40:1-2
God’s breakthroughs are beyond human reasoning. When all else fails He shows his power. God’s breakthroughs cannot be mistaken for anything else. When you are at your lowest and feel like there is no way out of your predicament, He reveals his power to show you that He is and will always be bigger than whatever challenge you may be facing.
It will cause you to love Him and know Him a lot more. It will make you never doubt His power again. When you stand afar and look at the aftermath of His blessings, you will have absolutely no doubt in your mind that it would not have been possible without your own strength. This is a great sign of God’s divine breakthroughs.

No one can affect it
I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Job 42:2.
God’s breakthroughs cannot be thwarted. Whatever He says concerning your future He will do. It doesn’t matter how long it takes or the obstacles that occur along the way. His promise to Abraham was kept despite the disobedience and idol worshipping of his descendants. He made them a great nation.
Similarly, whatever end He has purposed for you cannot be destroyed by anyone. This is why you must not allow anything or anyone to separate you from the love of God. You must always have faith in God and never doubt that what He has said about your future will surely come to pass.
It feels like it was meant to be
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11
It is common in movie scripts for antagonists to always lose in the end. It doesn’t matter the number of bullets hailed at the protagonists they always seem to survive until they defeat the antagonists. This is because the scripts of the movie have already been written and can’t be changed so everything that happens in the movie builds to the natural conclusion that the protagonist must be victorious in the end.
God’s spoken word about you is the script of your life. Your breakthrough was meant to happen because you were created for that very purpose. Wherever you find yourself at this very moment is by design of God’s script just so you will be in the position to receive that breakthrough when the time arrives.
There are no accidents with God and all His plans concerning you follow exactly as He wants. In the end, you will know Him better and also understand the power that He has for those who call on His name and belong to Him.
