Romans 8:18 Meaning
Christianity today is far easier than it was in Paul’s time. In Paul’s era, those who preached Christ and sought to win souls for His kingdom faced severe persecution, torture, and even death. Some were imprisoned, some were crucified, and some were even exiled, all for the sake of Christ. Jesus foretold this reality in John 15:20: “If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.”
Yet, Jesus Himself declared, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). He also taught that if we wish to be His disciples, we must take up our cross daily and follow Him, as stated in Luke 9:23: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
We are reminded in John 12:25, “Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” If we endure suffering and persecution for His name and refuse to renounce Him, our reward will be great in heaven, just as Jesus promised in Matthew 5:12: “Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.”
This is the glory Paul speaks of in Romans 8:18. Though we may suffer now, we are assured that these present trials are nothing in comparison to the eternal joy and glory that await us.
This truth remains relevant in our lives today. Whether you are facing difficulties in life or enduring ridicule from others for reading the Bible or speaking of God and Jesus, do not despair.
As Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” The glory that awaits those who faithfully spread the Word of God far outweighs any mockery or scorn we may face.
