God loves you. It’s a phrase you’ve likely shared with someone at some point, offering them comfort and reassurance. You’ve told them about God’s love in an effort to bring peace to their hearts. But what happens when they respond by asking, “How do you know God loves me?” or, “If God loves me, why am I going through this hardship?”

Today, we are going to take a look at some scriptures to help us understand God’s love, so the next time someone throws any of these questions to you, you will be well-equipped to answer their question.

God’s love is sacrificial

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

How many times have you distanced yourself from someone before they even had a chance to hurt you? How often have you turned your back on someone because they ignored your advice?

As humans, even when we love, we often give up when people disappoint us. But God’s love is different. He loves us even in our worst moments. Even when we disobey Him, even when we sin against Him, He never stops loving us.

Because of this incredible love, He sent Jesus to die for us, not because we deserved it, but because He couldn’t bear to be without us. That is love.

Many people feel unworthy to come before God, weighed down by guilt and shame. But this verse reminds us that God’s love isn’t based on our worthiness. Even in our brokenness, He loved us enough to make a way for us.

The enemy wants you to believe that your sins disqualify you from God’s love. He uses shame to push you away. But the truth is, no matter what you’ve done, God is always waiting with open arms. Run to Him, not away from Him.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 is perhaps one of the most well-known verses in the Bible, but have you ever truly meditated on its significance? This verse, much like Romans 5:8, reveals the depth of God’s love. Even in our sin, even in our rebellion, He gave up His only Son so that we might have a chance at eternity with Him.

Think about it. Would you sacrifice something precious for someone who constantly disregards you, who ignores your advice, and repeatedly makes the same mistakes? Most of us wouldn’t. Yet, God does.

He doesn’t focus on our trespasses; instead, He looks at us through the lens of His immeasurable love. 1 Peter 4:8 reminds us that love covers a multitude of sins, and God’s love covers us in ways we cannot fully comprehend.

God’s love is personal and intimate

1 John 3:1

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

In today’s culture, celebrities often give their fans names like “Beliebers” or “Arianators”, which gives their followers a sense of identity and belonging. Fans take pride in these titles, but when it comes to God, He goes far beyond just giving us a name as His followers. He calls us His children. Think about the deep bond between a father and a child.

A father teaches, guides, protects, and provides. That’s the kind of loving, personal relationship God has with us. He loves and cares for us like a perfect Father who only wants the best for His children. Unlike being a distant fan of a celebrity, where personal connection is impossible, with God, we have the privilege of an intimate, loving relationship with our Heavenly Father. That is the depth of God’s love for us.

God’s love is constant

Isaiah 54:10

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Mountains and hills are symbols of stability in nature, immovable and steadfast. But even these seemingly permanent features can be shaken or moved by natural events. Yet, this verse reassures us that no matter what happens, God’s love remains completely unshaken. How amazing is that?

Think about how easily human love can change. How many times has your love for someone been shaken because of something they did? Or how often has someone’s love or attitude toward you shifted due to a mistake you made?

But here, God promises that His love for us is unwavering, no matter what. His covenant of peace will always stand. We serve a compassionate God whose love and mercy shines through no matter what.

God’s love is unconditional

Romans 8:35-39

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We often wonder: If God loves me, why am I going through so much suffering? Why hasn’t He saved me yet? Why didn’t God stop this bad thing from happening?

First, it’s important to understand that God protects you from many more bad things you don’t know and can’t even think of. There are many unseen battles He fights on your behalf. But the trials you do experience happen for a reason. Verse 36 says, “For Your sake, we are killed all day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.” This lets us know that the closer we are to God, the more the enemy tries to attack us.

The devil doesn’t chase those far from God; he targets those who are close to Him. When you are farther from God and don’t have a personal relationship with him, the devil sees no need to come for you because your soul is already lost. He is after the souls in Christ, so that is the people he goes after.

But in all this, the bible tells us in Romans 5 to “glory in tribulations“, because through trials, we develop perseverance and character. It also says in Romans 8:37 that in all these things, we are more than conquerors because of God’s love for us. So no matter what life throws at you, no matter what the enemy does, you need to know that nothing they do can separate you from God’s love, so you will always be a conqueror.

1 John 4:9-10

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

How do you show someone you love them? Through words, through actions, through sacrifice? God demonstrated His love by giving us the greatest gift, His Son. His love was not based on our merit or righteousness.

This verse reminds us that it was not because we first loved God, but because He first loved us. His love for us existed before we ever knew Him. It remains unchanged whether we love Him back or not.

So the next time someone asks, How do I know that God loves me?, point them to this verse. His love isn’t something we earn; it’s something He freely gives.

God’s Love is Unending

Psalm 136:26

Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.

God deserves all our gratitude and praise because His love never wavers. We stumble, we sin, we walk away, yet every time we turn back to Him, He is there, waiting. His love is not conditional. It does not expire. It does not fade with time. No matter how long we stray, no matter how far we run, He remains steadfast, always ready to welcome us with open arms. How amazing is this love?

God’s Love is Transformative

1 John 4:16

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

What is love? 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love as patient, kind, and enduring. If you look closely at that passage, you’ll realize that it describes the very nature of God.

God is love. That means if we claim to live in Him, our lives must reflect that love. Love is the gateway to experiencing God. The moment we allow bitterness, hatred, or unforgiveness to take root in our hearts, we distance ourselves from Him. To abide in God is to abide in love.

John 16:27

No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

Have you ever taken a liking to someone simply because they were kind to your child, sibling, or a loved one? Even if you haven’t met them personally, the moment someone close to you tells you about their kindness, you instinctively feel a sense of warmth towards them.

This is exactly what Jesus reveals to us in John 16:27. Because we love Jesus and believe that He is the Son of God, the Father loves us too. Jesus was the physical embodiment of God on earth, walking among us, showing us the heart of the Father. If God were to knock on your door today, how would you receive Him?

But God’s love isn’t just something to be received, it’s something to be reflected. In Matthew 25:45, Jesus teaches that whatever we do for those in need, we do for Him. To truly experience the fullness of God’s love, we must extend that love to others.

God’s Love is Gentle and Merciful

Psalm 86:15

But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

God is powerful. He is sovereign. Now, imagine if with all that power, He was not full of love. Imagine if He ruled with only wrath and no grace. The world would be terrifying. But instead, we serve a God who is compassionate, gracious, and slow to anger. He is abounding in love and faithfulness.

His patience with us is a testament to His love. He does not deal with us as we deserve but extends His mercy time and time again. Even when we fail, He continues to pursue us, gently calling us back to Him.

God’s love is deeper, wider, and greater than we can ever fully comprehend. It is sacrificial, unending, unconditional, transformative, and merciful. He loves us, not because of what we do, but because of who He is.

Let this love fill your heart. Let it change you. And most importantly, let it flow through you, so that others may come to know just how much God loves them too.
