Matthew 5:28 Meaning
People often underestimate the power of lust. Many believe that as long as they are only thinking about it and not acting on it, it’s okay. But that is far from the truth, and Jesus makes this very clear in Matthew 5:28.
Where does adultery begin? Some people say that if they don’t physically engage with someone, then they haven’t committed adultery. Others argue that simply entertaining someone outside of their marriage constitutes adultery. However, Jesus teaches us that adultery begins with the eyes. If you look at someone with lustful intent, without even speaking to them, you have already committed the sin of adultery.
God desires purity of heart. This does not mean you can’t admire someone. It’s natural to notice and appreciate the beauty of God’s creation, there is no sin in that. The sin arises when you look at someone with lustful intent, when all you see is an object to satisfy your sexual desires.
The Bible tells us that our actions are a reflection of what is in our hearts (Luke 6:45). Yes, some people possess self-control and can keep their desires in check. But why not protect yourself from the temptation altogether by keeping a pure heart?
When we accept Christ into our lives, our actions should reflect His teachings. This means living by the way of the Spirit, not by the flesh or the law.
While many associate this verse primarily with married people, it applies to all, whether married or not. Do not look upon others with lustful intent. Instead, admire God’s creation with a pure heart.
Prayer
Almighty Father,
Today, I pray for my heart. I ask that you give me the strength to maintain a pure heart. Help me not to look upon others with lustful intent. Cleanse me of all lust and immoral desires. Fill my heart with things that please you and glorify your Holy name.
Forgive me for all the times I have allowed lust to take control of me and give me the strength to overcome the desires of the flesh. In Jesus' name, I pray,
Amen.
