Ephesians 4:26
"Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil a foothold."
This verse reminds us that while anger is a natural human emotion, we are not to let it lead us into sin. There’s nothing wrong with feeling angry — even God expresses anger throughout Scripture.
Since we are made in His image, anger is part of our emotional makeup and, at times, even necessary. You can deeply love someone and still feel anger toward them when they hurt or disappoint you.
However, the verse warns against allowing anger to control us. While the emotion itself might be justified, the actions that follow often are not. God has given us instincts and emotions to help us navigate life, but using those feelings outside His will leads us astray.
The devil often takes advantage of such moments. He tries to manipulate our natural emotions, like anger, for his own destructive ends. Instead of seeking justice or resolution, we end up stewing in pride, bitterness, vengeance, and malice — losing sight of why we were angry in the first place.
That’s why the verse cautions us not to let the sun go down on our anger. Lingering anger is dangerous. When you dwell on it, you open the door to more toxic emotions and behaviours. The devil thrives in that space, stirring division, resentment, and unforgiveness. If left unchecked, anger can lead to actions that are both sinful and deeply damaging, even irreversible. That’s why it’s vital to deal with it quickly and in a godly way.
Hebrews 12:14
"Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord."
The phrase “make every effort” comes from the Greek diōketē, meaning to pursue, run after, or actively strive for something. This tells us that peace doesn’t come passively, it requires intentional and persistent work. Just as maintaining a healthy marriage takes compromise and forgiveness, living peacefully with others takes consistent effort.
Disagreements, misunderstandings, and anger are inevitable in any relationship. But as Christians, we are called to manage these moments with maturity, humility, and grace. We must be willing to pursue peace, even when it’s difficult. Even when others don’t meet us halfway, we are still called to try. The alternative, living in division and hostility, creates fertile ground for the enemy’s work.
Importantly, the verse doesn’t say to pursue peace only with those who agree with you or treat you kindly. It says “with everyone.” That includes those who oppose you, misunderstand you, or challenge you. This is part of the call to holiness, to be set apart for God’s purposes. Holiness means separating ourselves from sinful reactions and embracing Christlike responses.
The verse concludes by saying, “without holiness no one will see the Lord.” This doesn’t imply that salvation is earned through our efforts, but it does suggest that those who are truly saved will desire to live holy lives. Holiness is a fruit of salvation. A person who refuses to forgive, who harbours resentment, and who avoids peace at all costs, may need to re-examine whether they truly understand the gospel they claim to believe.
Prayers for Conflict Resolution
Conflict is a painful experience. It tears at the heart, tests the soul, and challenges our ability to remain steadfast in righteousness. But through prayer, we draw strength, patience, and wisdom from God to navigate these turbulent times. These prayers are heartfelt cries for help, honest expressions of inner battles, and a humble plea for peace within and without.
Prayer to Overcome Anger
Dear Lord, I come before You overwhelmed with emotion. I am consumed by anger, and it is eating away at me. The desire for revenge echoes loudly in my mind, and I find myself harbouring thoughts of malice and vengeance. These thoughts are not mine, Lord; they do not represent the person I want to be. But I am hurting deeply, intensely, and to the core. I admit that I am finding it very hard to forgive. The betrayal or hurt I’ve experienced has wounded me in ways I struggle to articulate. Yet I know, Lord, that holding on to this anger will only destroy me. So, I ask for Your divine help. Please help me to overcome this burning rage. Quench the fire that threatens to consume my heart. Restrain these emotions that lead me to hate, and instead, help me to fix my eyes on righteousness. Teach me to release the anger that binds me. Amen.
Prayer for a Forgiving Heart
Dear Lord, Today I ask for a heart that forgives. Everything inside me wants to hold on to the wrong done to me. My thoughts are constantly reminding me of the injustice, and my heart is heavy with anger, disgust, and dread. It feels like my heart has grown hard, like a stone lodged in my chest. I keep replaying the offence, and it torments me. But I do not want to live in this torment. Lord, please touch my heart. Soften it. Let Your love melt the bitterness and help me to close the door to the devil’s whispers. Let forgiveness be my shield and my victory. Help me to move on. Help me to stay pure and holy in the face of evil. Teach me to reject vengeance and embrace grace. I long to forgive, even if it takes time, and I ask for Your strength in this journey. Amen.
Prayer to Remove Pride
Dear Lord, I recognise the pride in my heart, and I confess it before You. Pride has deceived me into believing I am always right. It has made me look down on others and made me think that only my pain matters. It has caused me to hold on to anger when I should have chosen peace. Please remove this spirit of pride from within me. Give me the humility to admit when I am wrong, and the strength to extend an olive branch. May I be bold enough to reach out to those I’ve wronged and strive for reconciliation. Keep my thoughts pure, Lord. Cast out every evil seed - malice, pride, revenge, and unforgiveness. Plant instead the fruits of holiness and righteousness. Amen.
Prayer for Holiness
Father Lord,
Set me apart from sin. Let me not be conformed to the ways of the world, but instead be transformed by Your Spirit. Help me to be a shining light in the darkness, a vessel for Your grace.
I ask for Your strength to pursue righteousness. May Your holiness be my standard and my guide. Turn my heart away from sinful desires and worldly anger. Teach me to strive for peace, even when everything around me calls for war.
Let my thoughts remain pure. May the sun never set on my anger. Do not let anger master me, but instead mould me through Your Spirit into a person of peace and purpose.
Amen.

Father Lord, I ask for the gift of patience. Help me to understand the perspectives of others. Let me not be blinded by pride or quick to respond with hostility. Give me the grace to pause, to reflect, and to act with wisdom. Let me resist the pressure of outside voices that provoke anger. Let my anger not control my words or my behaviour. Teach me to speak words that soothe, not words that spark conflict. Let my actions promote peace. May my presence be calming, not provocative. May I act always in humility and grace. Amen.
Prayer to Remove Bitterness
Dear Lord, Please uproot every seed of bitterness in my heart. I don’t want to dwell on the evil I’ve seen or experienced. The scars on my heart are real, but I ask that You help me heal. Help me let go of pain that no longer serves a purpose. Don’t let the actions of a few cause me to lose myself. Do not let hatred or resentment define my character. Let me remember Your mercy and favour in my life, so that I may extend the same grace to others. No matter the injustice or hardship, help me to remain holy. Let the wickedness of others not corrupt my soul. Make me a living symbol of forgiveness and resolution. Amen.
Prayer for Self-Control
Dear Lord, Thank You for sustaining me. Even in the midst of provocation, especially when the person who wronged me shows no remorse, I still choose to come before You. I am tempted to respond with bitterness. I am tempted to retaliate. But Lord, I ask for calmness. Restrain me from doing something I will regret. The devil wants to use my emotions to lead me into sin and destruction, but I will not be his puppet. Grant me self-control. Teach me to hold my peace and let go of thoughts that destroy. Help me abandon any hate that lingers in my heart. Amen.
Prayer for Hope of Resolution
Dear Lord, I lift this conflict up to You. I ask for calm, for wisdom, and for understanding. Let peace take root where there is chaos. Let harmony flourish where there is strife. Let there be a willingness among all involved to find common ground. May Your holiness shine through every conversation, every exchange, and every attempt at reconciliation. Drive out the devil from our midst. Bless everyone involved with the spirit of peace. Let this conflict end not in bitterness, but in understanding. Amen.
Peace is not served on a silver platter. Just as the path to salvation is narrow and steep, so too is the path to true peace, difficult, but worth it. The devil is the father of chaos. He thrives in confusion, destruction, and hatred. He plants discord so he can reap souls. He wants people to hate, destroy, and isolate each other. In conflict, he finds his strongest foothold.
But we have a choice. We can be agents of peace or tools of destruction. Ask yourself: do you want to be a special agent of the devil? If not, then refuse to let anger possess your heart. Refuse to let it blind you and make you sin against God and your fellow man.
Let us choose peace. Let us choose love. Let us choose God.
