He said, 'If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.'
Exodus 15:26
After God delivered the Israelites from the hands of the Egyptians, he established a conditional covenant with them. When God speaks, it is vital that we listen, for it is through his words that he sets out how we are to live a rich and fulfilling life.
Think of God as your manual, your guide, or the instruction leaflet tucked inside the box of something you’ve bought and must assemble. Here, he lays down the principles for good health.
In this account, the people were complaining about the bitter water at Marah. God, in his compassion, turned the water sweet so they could drink. Yet he also gave them their responsibility.
The first part of the verse sets out the condition: if they listen carefully, not merely hearing but being willing to put his words into practice, they would receive a blessing.
Listening that leads to action means the instruction doesn’t simply pass through your mind but enters your heart and compels you to respond. True obedience goes beyond passive hearing; it is completed when you allow God’s commands to move you to action.
The next part of the verse reveals the promise: God would protect them from the diseases that struck the Egyptians. Recall that many of those plagues involved boils, pestilence, and even death. This was a promise of health, of ongoing physical wellbeing, given in response to wholehearted obedience.
Finally, God explains why he makes this covenant: because he is the one who heals. When a condition is attached to a promise, its fulfilment is often automatic. In a contract or covenant, once the condition is met, the promise is guaranteed, regardless of how people feel about it.
Likewise, God’s healing power is not something he must summon at will, it is intrinsic to who He is. When the woman with the issue of blood touched Christ’s garment in faith, healing flowed out of him immediately; he did not have to consciously decide to heal her. Once the condition was fulfilled, the promise came automatically.
God is the healer, and in him resides the ever-present promise of health and restoration when we walk in obedience. This is truly good news.
