Let me not be put to shame, LORD, for I have cried out to you; but let the wicked be put to shame and be silent in the realm of the dead.
Psalm 31:17
Life can be very boring and routine until something embarrassing happens to you. You may be the most likable person in your family, marriage, relationships, place of work, school, organisation, or wherever you may be. You may have lots of friends and acquaintances in your life.
It may seem like everything is going in your favour and that there is nothing that can ruin it. It may seem that the people who like you are genuine and will continue to love you no matter what happens to you.
What you need to always remember is that things can turn very quickly as long as human relations are concerned. All it takes might be a leaked video, a secret scandal coming out, someone framing you, a small mistake on your part, or a small stumble for everything to go from rosy to very glum.
People who used to like you will start pulling away from you. Those you used to call your friends will now start talking about you like they knew you were bad all along. Those you thought would help your case would rather fan the flames. As they say, you only know who your friends are when no one wants to be around you.
Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.
Isaiah 54:4
One of the most famous betrayals in the Bible happened to our Lord and Saviour. No one can really tell why Judas was the one chosen to betray Christ, but apart from Judas, there was a time when one of the most loyal disciples of Christ could have shown his loyalty to him during a very difficult time but he didn’t.
It is easy to show friendship and loyalty when everything is going great. In times of disgrace and shame, people who you thought would stand up for you are the very ones who will turn their backs on you. Peter denied that he knew Jesus three times when he was in trouble and being shamed (Matthew 26:69-75).
As a Christian, you will go through times when things do not go smoothly for you. That is why when Jesus taught us to pray, he said “lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil”. The fact that we live in a fallen world means that there will be times when evil finds its way to your door. It is times like this that you need the Lord the most. His word must be constantly on your lips.
There are those who have lost all hope of redemption and normality and have proceeded to do the unthinkable because they have gone through disgrace. You need the grace of God to keep you in times like this. As mentioned earlier, even though you ask God to keep disgrace from your door you must also pray for strength to resist evil thoughts when you feel ashamed.
Prayers against shame and disgrace
Prayer to not be shamed
Dear Lord,
I pray against shame and ask for Your protection from any efforts from anyone to disgrace me. Grant me the discernment to recognize genuine people from those who are fake. Give me the wisdom to make the right decisions and avoid committing myself mistakenly. Help me cultivate self-control, and bless me with a calm heart and a steady spirit. Soften my temper and bring me calm in moments of anger. Let those who set traps for me fall into them instead, and keep me safe from harm and shame.
Amen.
Prayer to not be disgraced
Dear Lord,
I pray for Your favor and protection. Keep disgrace far from my door and guide my steps into paths of glory.
Grant me the strength to resist evil and lead me away from temptation. Help me to uphold my honour and integrity in all things.
Fill my life with Your grace and favour. Preserve my dignity and the respect of those around me. Let me bring no shame to myself or my loved ones, but instead, let my ways be blessed and honourable in every way.
Amen.
Prayer for strength during shame
Heavenly Father,
I acknowledge my imperfections and confess that what I did was wrong. Thank You for Your forgiveness, which I know I have received through Your grace. I pray for strength and grace during this difficult time.
When I feel abandoned and forgotten by those around me, please remind me that you are ever present in my life. When others pretend not to know me, and I am separated from my loved ones, please remind me that you will never leave me nor forsake me. Be my comforter and my source of solace. Help me rise above this disgrace, and grant me divine redemption. In the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen.
Prayer for real friends
Dear Lord in Heaven,
I pray for real friends and genuine people to be a part of my life. Send me those who will stand by me through all circumstances. I pray for people who will understand both my strengths and my weaknesses and love me either way. Grant me a discerning heart and mind to recognize true companionship.
Lead me to those who are sincere, not those who would disgrace me. Not those who harbor jealousy or wish for my downfall. Not those who tear me down or wish me harm. Surround me with people guided by Your Spirit. People who will bring wisdom, light, and quality to my life, especially in dark times.
Amen.
Prayer against evil thoughts
Dear Lord,
I cancel all evil thoughts during this difficult time and ask You to shut the evil one out of my life. Banish demonic thoughts from my mind and fill me with Your grace and strength. Help me to resist any drastic actions, for I value the life You have given me and I do not want to lose it.
Restrain me in moments of weakness, and bring peace to my heart in times of torment. Close my ears to the negative noise around me and protect my family during this trying time. Keep me grounded, sane, and focused on You. Draw me closer to You in my loneliness and sadness; speak to my heart and comfort me.
Help me hold fast to You, trusting in Your love and guidance through all these difficulties.
Amen.
Prayer for shame and guilt
Merciful Lord,
I come before You with a heavy heart, knowing that I have sinned against You and my fellow men. I feel the weight of my wrongdoings and the guilt and shame that now linger. Lord, You know my heart and the deep remorse I feel for what I have done. I humbly pray that You, dear Lord, will forgive me for my sins and make me anew.
I ask that You touch the hearts of everyone involved, Lord, and help them find a place in their hearts to forgive me. Please lift the burden of guilt that I carry in my heart and bring peace to my soul. Help me to forgive myself, as You have forgiven me, and give me the strength to live a life that will restore my honour.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Prayer for redemption
Heavenly Father,
Help me through this difficult time and strengthen me to hold on to my strength. Remind me of the good times and give me the strength and courage to keep moving forward. Help me shut out all the negative voices and distractions around me.
Let others remember the good I have done and the kindness I have shown. Guide me to surround myself with the right people. Those who uplift me, not those who take advantage of me or lead me astray. Redeem me, O Lord; wash me and make me new. Let my future shine brighter than my past, and help me to regain the trust I have lost.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Prayer against haunting past
Heavenly Father,
I come against those who wish for my downfall and those who use my past mistakes against me. I pray that You cause confusion among them and bring them to their knees before You.
I blind any ambitions they have to harm or destroy me and shatter every evil plan they have devised against me. I cancel their ambitions to ruin me. Let their schemes be exposed for all to see.
Let them fall into the traps they have set and be ensnared in the pits they have dug for me.
Let their plans never see the light of day, and cause them to stumble and fail in their strides to destroy me.
Amen.

Disgrace and shame isn’t something anyone wants to be facing. Everyone would rather live a life full of peace and anonymity. Unfortunately though, because of evil in the world, there are those who will try to disgrace you because of something they’d gain from your suffering.
A high-level official who asked his friends to not show a controversial video he made to anyone ended up losing everything he had worked for because somebody leaked the video. Who knows why they did it? Maybe they fell out with him or realised they could get money from sharing it. That is the world we live in.
Anyone at all can get you into trouble including your family members for whatever reason. In those times, you must make sure you are ever closer to God. He will keep you from drowning in your troubles and grant you redemption.
May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.
