Verse – Matthew 6:2

So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Devotional

There are different reasons why people give to charity. Some do it for recognition, hoping their businesses will receive good publicity. In this case, they don’t truly care about those they are giving to, but rather aim to promote their own fame. Others give because they feel it will exonerate them from something bad they’ve done, using their donation to ease their guilt. Some give simply because everyone else is giving, not wanting to feel left out.

As Christians, the key to giving is to do it selflessly. While there is a sense of good feeling knowing that you have made someone’s life a little better, the true essence of giving is in helping those who are in need. Let this be your mission this Christmas: to make people’s lives a little better. God does not prosper you so you can keep it to yourself, but rather, so you can bless others you encounter.

This Christmas I will make the lives of a needy person a little better with the blessings and strength I receive from God

Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank you for the many blessings you bestow upon me. Thank you for the gift of life. This Christmas, lead me to those in need and help me share my blessings with them. Let me not be boastful in my giving, but remain humble, knowing that all I have comes from You. May my actions reflect Your love and grace, and let my blessings be plentiful, not for my glory, but for the benefit of others. Help me to be a vessel of kindness and generosity, bringing light to those who need it most.

Amen.
